There’s a new intellectual property dispute in the media this week.
Rapper and business mogul Jay Z and a business partner, Juan Perez, have been owners of a chain of nightclubs named “40/40” since 2003. Since then, Boston Red Sox Star, David Ortiz, has opened a nightclub in the Dominican Republic named “Forty Forty.”
Jay Z doesn’t buy that it is merely coincidence. He’s suing Ortiz for trademark infringement to the tune of $5 million. The court papers even include photos of Ortiz at the 40/40 Club in Manhattan in 2008.
